AIX AND THE THEATRES
AIX, LAND OF MUSIC
The Festival de Pâques d'Aix-en-Provence is taking place for the most part at the Grand Théâtre de Provence, and at the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume.
In 2007, at the gateway to the historic city of Aix-en-Provence, a new building dedicated entirely to music was erected: the Grand Théâtre de Provence.

20 000 m2 including 6,000 terraces, 1,382 seats, 10 rehearsal rooms, one of which has 440 m2This exceptional building, designed by Italian architect Vittorio Gregotti, is part of the Sextius-Mirabeau urban development project for the city of Aix-en-Provence. A new cultural forum is being built here, including the Pavillon Noir for the Ballet Preljocaj, the Cité du Livre, the Grand Théâtre de Provence and, from 2013, the new Conservatoire de Musique et de Danse.
The Grand Théâtre offers an average of more than 100 performances a year, welcomes artists in residence throughout the year (Orchestre Français des Jeunes, Les Siècles, Café Zimmermann, etc.) and opens its studios and auditorium to the Aix-en-Provence Festival of Lyric Art in May, June and July.
Its raison d'être is to offer a unifying venue for music (symphonic concerts, chamber music, jazz, opera, recitals, world music) and dance, open to as many people as possible, music lovers and novices alike, and resolutely focused on education.
The greatest international artists are regularly invited here: after Jessye Norman who inaugurated it, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Hélène Grimaud, Vadim Repin and many others have been warmly applauded in this hall.
Orchestras such as the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre national de France, the Orchestre national de Lyon, the Orchestre de Paris, the Freiburger Barockorchester and Concerto Köln are regularly on the programme.
A number of major dance productions have also been staged at the Grand Théâtre, whose huge stage lends itself perfectly to ballet: the Ballet Preljocaj, the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, etc. have all spent time here.
Around the concert season, numerous workshops and meetings are open to all, to encourage access to music. Throughout the year, the Grand Théâtre, with the support of the Assami association, undertakes operations to raise awareness of music among disadvantaged audiences (prisons, hospitals, etc.). Its expertise and success have enabled it to establish fruitful and lasting links with several of France's major artistic institutions, including the Cité de la Musique in Paris and Radio France, with which it has a partnership.

Finally, the Grand Théâtre de Provence, which plays a major role in the cultural vitality of its region, is also a real economic player: with its own 110,000 spectators a year, it contributes to the appeal of a town and an area of 300,000 inhabitants which, thanks to its cultural and tourist initiatives, welcomes five to six times its population every year. The presence of more than 2,500 artists in 2013 as part of the programme and the Easter Festival, in addition to the 130,000 spectators expected, is also a significant factor in local economic development (restaurants, overnight stays, etc.).
In 2008, the Grand Théâtre de Provence-Eurl Mirabeau won an award for being the main job creator in the Pays d'Aix.
